XAL Showroom

At the new XAL showroom, they presented the new commodity and boutique products. Under the Commodity products we saw the Vela, Mino 2.5 and Baso family.

Vela Evo was launched globally in 2017 in 3 sizes of 1.5', 2', 3' and 4' diameter. The 1.5' model is priced at $540 and goes up to $5000 for 4' version which can be used even as a high bay architectural fixture due to high lumen output.

What is unique about this fixture is the double sided printed led board, for uplight. Currently, the standard color temperatures although the tuneable white is under development for European market, it is available in both tuneable and RGB for US market.

In the surface mounting installation the gap between the cone shape housing on the back of the fixture and the ceiling is just 1 inch and wont be noticed even when looked closely.

The BASO family is another product which we looked at. It is exclusively available in US market and comes in 1.5", 2.5" and 4"  wide recessed extruded aluminum profile, trimless or with trim. The Wallwasher  version has 1.5 aperture, snap-in lens, 3500K and 4500K available. It is also customization for larger projects and quoted around $90/ft. The board and cover are integrated and use snap system to be placed to the channel, aluminium board to help the heat transition. It also has the wall to wall configuration.

The Baso Cove is coming on August 2018 in 3.5" and 4" aperture. It also benefits from snap-in system to be used in trimed and trimless shape in wood ceiling.

Later they showcased the Task system and Move It system which belong to their boutique products line.

The Task acoustic is an office lighting. It is an edgeLed product in 4', 8' sections, 2'x2' corner and curved corner. They recently launched acoustical panels made out of PVD  to reduce noise. It is designed in an inlay and single mount to go with the fixture in half circle or half square shapes based on fixture shape.

The Task System is another Edge lighting product in this family. It comes in 4', 8', 12' sections and 2'x2' corner which also comes as wall mounted.  There is a linear connector between each fixture. The driver is in the first 3 set to keep the board temperature down. The optic is in 4 layers to achieve low glare. There is also an extra set of LED on the back of channel to achieve the asymmetric distribution. The ratio of direct/indirect could be between 60% to 40% and 30% to 70%  uplight. The direct/indirect lighting are controlled together (no separate dimming). Suspension head and wall to wall option are also available for this fixture. The quoted price is around $100/ft.

Their other boutique product is the Move It System. It is a magnetic track system with 1" or 2" wide suspended extruded profile channel and various inset options like; spotlight, linear light and pendent recessed light and uplight which are flexible and adjustable. The spotlight has an adjustable beam angle of 17° to 43°.

The Move It system can Also be used as a wall-washer. It comes in 1', 4' and could have spotlights on the track which are non-current dimmable (12V). There are also Opals for 1' and 2' channels. Currently, the ends are glowing but they are considering to develop a non-glowing end. The snap-in system also reduces the errors of a contractor in case of the reverse installation. The channel can be used in the architectural cove. For using grazer as a cove light, only 6" spacing is required for shooting the light. They are developing a half channel in 2018 to be used instead of an architectural cove.

Digital dimming can be used for downlights on this system and Dali for individual track heads (700 lm to 1200 lm). They are currently looking to work with US control system manufacturers to make their controls compatible with this line.

From the Move It family, the Move It 25 with multi connector node is a unique outstanding magnetic lighting system. It can be ordered as a standard parts from the cut sheet. The end cap is a around unit which is power feeder with electric connectors, remote driver, 24 constant voltage. Each power feeder can takes 6 arms (channel is not cuttable. It has magnetic part.) with possibility of rotation for each arm to achieve the desired angle. It is a time consuming and expensive fixture, since it needs a lot of customization and communication.

And finally, they presented their newest creation, UNICO.

It gives a total control and flexibility over the light shape. They achieved a very narrow 12° spot, 35° round or square spot,  55° and 75° flood light, wall washer and symmetric/asymmetric light distribution all in one fixture. It has 2 mounting option, 6 design shapes, 9 light insets (up to 420 lm each) and three control options which can be individually combined.

Rich Brilliant Willing

Rich Brilliant Willing have expanded their line of lighting fixtures and stopped by to introduce us to some of them. Brim is a small adjustable bedside light that can be customized with three shades with multiple finish options. The base of the fixture is only available with three finish options, however for high volume orders they might be able to do a custom color. There is a mounting plate that can adapt to a standard j-box or they can provide their own smaller j-box for installation.

The Hoist is a fixture designed in collaboration with Meyer Davis. The design intent is that it is a kit of parts that can be assembled in multiple variations.

Pilot is another fixture designed by Meyer Davis and is a pendant with shovel shaped fiberglass shades. There are various configurations of groupings to choose from.

Warm dim technology is standard for several of their fixtures including the Pilot and can be added to any of their other LED products.

Optic Arts

Optic Arts stopped by with their product line so we could see their updates a little bit closer and in more detail than when we stopped by their booth at LEDucation last month. They have developed a family of linear tape called STP and is available in various wattages with a very tight pitch.

One standout product was their closet rod fixture that is designed with a polycarbonate strip at the top that helps prevent the hangers from scratching the finish and leaving a mark. There is also a prismatic lens at the bottom which was visually appealing to look at.

Optic Arts has also developed new clips that help with installation in the field. They have them in both joiner and feed connector versions and they allow the installer to connect components without needing to solder in the field. There are some limits with the design in that they cannot be combined with the STP series.

There are now three types of configurations when it comes to ordering product from Optic Arts.

  1. Field Configuration: provides all of the parts separately and the contractor is responsible for complete assembly including cutting to size. Products are available with a 2-3 day lead time.
  2. Field Assembly: provides all of the components cut to the correct dimensions to the site and the contractor does final assembly such as connecting the feeds to the power supply and inserting the LED strips into the extrusions. Products are available with a 2-4 week lead time.
  3. Factory Assembly: products are built to order in the factory and ready for installation on site. Products are available with a 4-6 week lead time.

We also got to test out the dimming capabilities of the vintage dim series. The low end was a little more orange than we would prefer, however they mentioned that you can customize the dimming curve to control how fast it gets to the low end of the color range.

Ledra: Alphabet

Ledra Brands stopped by with their downlights from Alphabet. They have a wide variety of downlights with many options. One of these options is an activated lens designed for either the 3” or 4” aperture fixtures. Through an app, you can control the beam spread size and distribution shape.

You can customize all of their downlights by selecting from different LED modules. One unique option is a smart module that can send info to phones that are in proximity via bluetooth.

Alphabet prides themselves on having platforms that can build up so they can hit different price points depending on the level of complexity. The regular fixed downlights start at a base price and the price goes up for each additional part such as adjustability or a trimless mud-in flange.

Tegan Lighting

Tegan Lighting showed us their interior track system that has various track heads and finishes including polished brass, however that particular finish is only available with their MR16 version. The track is surface or recessed and can be cantilevered up to 2’ from the wall.

The Kore fixture is a linear surface tube fixture that can be surface, semi-recessed or pendant mounted. It is available both for interior and exterior applications.

We also got to take another look at 5e Exton system. They catenary Lighting system is very customizable and has a variety of standard mounting accessories already developed.

Vision 3

Vision 3 Lighting stopped by to give us an update on their products. They boast a 2-3 week lead time for all fixtures as a standard and can possibly do 1 week depending on the fixture and quantity. Their line voltage fixture has a 1200 Lumen package with the driver on board and 0-10v dimming.

They have tested their low-voltage fixtures with Soraa for dimming compatibility with their transformers. There are various standard finishes available as standard including polished stainless steel.

Finelite

There is a new profile that has been added to the Finelite repertoire called the HO4. It is an inverted U shape measuring 4x4 in section. The sides are edge lit allowing them to achieve the thin form factor. There can also be an uplight component added controlled on a separate circuit.

We did notice a harsh cutoff line when we held the fixture parallel to the wall at 6’. One nice feature of the HO4 is that because of the lens material, it can be continuous even when multiple fixtures are butted end to end. The fixture is available in 1’ increments.

Finelite has a surface and recessed version as well. O-10V dimming is standard with the driver integral to the fixture.

We also got to take a look at the E2 fixture which is a direct/indirect fixture they have added to their family. Because of the small profile, it does require a remote driver. They have designed the power cable and support to appear the same so they match both sides. There are multiple recessed boxes depending on the driver size required and all utilize a magnetic canopy attachment for a seamless appearance. The canopy for the structural points has the same magnetic canopy as the power side, however, they can provide a smaller canopy for the non-powered points if desired.

Holm Lighting

We got a chance to see a new steplight designed by Holm Lighting called the Nook. It’s a large recessed steplight with a unique feature that lets you adjust the distribution in the field. Right now their optics only include forward throws but they are in the process to develop wider distributions. The Nook can also be installed higher on the wall as an up light or in a box to become a bollard.

Visa Lighting

Visa Lighting stopped by to introduce two of their new exterior fixtures; the Zume and Laterna. The Zume fixture is a globe-shaped  light with a metal top that has linear perforations. The perforations can be eliminated or changed to a custom pattern at their factory. The diffuse globe is available in either opaque or slightly translucent options. There are two different sizes to choose from.

The other fixture is the Laterna and has a modern glowing cylinder surrounded by crisscrossing braces framing the fixture. It is also available with the opaque or slightly translucent diffuser and two sizes.

Both of these fixtures are available with different mounting options including a catenary installation. Visa provides all of the recommendations for connection to the catenary system and can advise the structural engineer but are not providing the catenary system themselves.

Erco

Erco is focusing on interior fixtures this year by bringing some more of their European fixtures to the North American markets. One of the new fixtures we looked at was called the Compar. It is a miniature celled fixture that can come on different groupings from 1 to 12. The deep baffle helps minimize the glare. There are different optics available for the Compar family including a 60, an 80, a 55x90, a 35x90, and a wall wash optic. The 55x90 is designed to spread the light further perpendicularly to the fixture and the 35x90 spreads it further parallel to the fixture. This gives you options for different applications such as an open office and a conference table, respectively. We also took a look at the wall washer. As usual, erco designs their optics for high performance and this fixture is no different.

The fixtures are trimmed or trim less with a standard finish that is off-white but they can do a custom RAL color for no extra charge.

The other fixture we took a look at is their new track head called Oseris. It has a round aperture and rotates on an angle from the stem. There are two sizes and it is available with all of their optics available to the other track head families.

ERCO also announced that they will provide 27k as a standard color temperature for their lines and 35k is available upon request.

ALW

ALW stopped by our office to show us the SuperPlane with ControlRoll optics. It is the new linear family of slot, suspended and surface luminaries. It is available in two widths, 2.5" and 4", and provided with lumen packages of up to 1200lm/ft with dimming capabilities of 0%. There are Tuneable White, RGB, and RGB White options.  There is an option of adding integral down lights or sensors. The ControlRoll Optics is a great feature that provides seamless illumination with the continuous lens. The ControlRoll lens rolls out and snaps into a 'C' channel on the fixture. Maximum length of the lens is 250'.   The LED boards and drivers can be removed as one unit which provides flexibility during shipping and installation of slot applications.
