ESTILUZ

Today, we visited the Estiluz Showroom to look at their product range. They had may great options, mainly for hospitality and high-end residential projects.

Here is a highlight:

VOLTA Family:

  • One of their original fixture families - mainly designed as table and floor lights.

  • The Pendant version has a standard size of 2ft, double and triple heads.

  • NEW: Volta is now available as monopoint with two interchangeable 15 and 50 beam spreads (both included).

REVOLTA is an interesting looking acoustic fixture (playful) with 40% sound absorption. DN $2000 with 3 pendant fixtures.

  • The acoustic panel can also be removed for a fully open design.

CIRC Family:

  • Another one of the original designs. Available for interior and exterior use with different mounting options.

  • Each frosted glass fixture is approx. 6watts with 720 lumens (perhaps initial). Comes as 2700K as standard

  • The pendant model comes as a single or group.

  • The sconce model is now offered as an integrated in a mirror. Great option as a vanity mirror! Available in Oval, Small and Large Round shapes.

  • They have the option to do custom size mirrors and have multiple lights.

BOLS - New family:

  • Powder coated aluminum body with hard-wired and plug-in options.

  • Available for indoor and outdoor use.

  • Blos floor and table lamp come with an optional planter and tray as add-on accessories.

MORSE: Pendant mounted linear tube with 3 heads (short cylinder look). The lights can rotate 320 degree and can provide a good up/down effect.

CUPOLINA:

  • ADA rated. We liked the simplicity of it and think it's a great option for hospitality and residential projects.

  • We discussed the feasibility of adding a on/off switch to the sconce and tabletop models for use as a reading light. Estiluz is reviewing.

FRAME is another table and floor lamp that we liked. The light reflection is pretty. Comes in 3 different sizes. Outdoor rated. DN is $800 to $1000.

General Info:

Dimming is Triac as standard down to 5% (but in reality more like 20%).

0-10V is available for better dimming and just needs to be listed when ordering (not on the cut-sheet).

Not all fixtures are offered in 2700K, although they are considering it. Some outdoor options are offered in warmer 2400K (Nice!)

They have a warehouse in New Jersey for in-stock items. Lead time for available items is 3 to 5 days.

For custom-made and new orders, the lead time is 8 weeks.

MARSET

Today, we paid a visit to the MARSET showroom to look at their expanded indoor and outdoor fixtures.

Overall, the fixtures come in playful colors and unique finishes. One thing to remember is that not all the products are offered in 2700K, although they offered more in this CCT than other decorative manufacturers we’ve dealt with.

They have a couple of new outdoor fixtures, such as the JAIMA pendant, and floor mounted fixture with a flexible fabric shade. We also liked the SANTORINI, a pendant-mounted fixture inspired by the lantern shape with a glass lens and playful finishes. It looks like a modern-looking vapor-proof fixture.

Another interesting fixture that we looked at was the BOHEMIA. We liked the opaque outer finished blown glass which was somehow translucent and provided a nice light effect.

JUNIPER

Today, we went to JUNIPER's new showroom in Soho to look at their updated fixtures and the new magnetic track system, MULTIVERSE.

Below are some photos of their well-known THIN SYSTEM in horizontal and vertical installation, METROPOLIS tubular pendant, AXIS, and the modular FLUTES.

The THIN SYSTEM is not completely node-free. When dimmed down 50%, we start to see the diodes, and they were completely visible once dimmed below 30%. As a solution, we suggested making it slightly larger in diameter or using a more populated LED strip.

Update: 2700K is now a standard CCT.

The new magnetic track system, MULTIVERSE.

A low-voltage power distribution system with Pivot elements and connector “nodes”. It is a very low profile ribbon track with a dual circuit, paintable on-site to match the mounting surface.

It uses a magnetic system with a capacity of connecting up to 16 miniature spot modules.

**When the module is flipped 180 degrees, it will be on the second circuit. However, there is no indication (marking) on the module to determine which circuit it is.

The advantage of this system is that it could run 150FT from the power supply without voltage drop.

The 90 degree connector nodes (corner, inside & outside 90s) are currently in a curved shape. We suggested doing it with a sharp, straight edge, plus offering custom angles in addition to 90 degree.

The spotlight head comes in 500 lm and 800 lm Outputs with 360 degree rotation and 90 degree tilt. It comes with field-replaceable beam spread optics, snoot, & hex louver. The frosted lens is not a standard option but provided if required.

The mono-point version comes with a j-box cover plate.

  • Soft curved, seamless form, RGB color.
  • Cost effective.
  • Top lit, 20% uplight contribution.
  • Acoustic panel on top as an addition is coming soon!

The Wall grazer, part of the PG4 Series.

We liked the grazing!

  • What we also noticed was the optic is a little greenish. Perhaps because of the silicon lens!
  • As it can be seen in this photo, the light is located 4”-5” away from the wall which causes a nice 15° light distribution on the floor.

Square Series

  • The illuminated dropped lens can be popped up too for indirect lighting

CURVED LS SERIES:

  • 30° and 45° radius curve.
  • It comes as direct/indirect as well.

  • NOTE: They are using Osram, Samsung LED chips for round fixtures
  • Cree LED chips are used in linear systems and the track heads.
  • Their facility allows for the max cutting length of 12’ run.
  • For 2019, they are considering more sconces and wet location linear lights.

SDA Showroom

Today we stopped by the SDA Showroom to see what is new from their line card.

Designplan also informed us that they do have a steam room rated fixture. (what is it called?)

Ecosense

Ecosense is coming out with their own control system- the lore driver. The image below shows the road map of what the company is striving towards- though some of it is not yet realized.

ERCO

ERCO is coming out with a new line of wall washers. A nice feature of this line is that their wall washers can be closer to the wall (1 to 5 ratio for the wall to ceiling). These come in black matte as a standard finish. They come in flanged and trimeless. These fixture should be coming out in January.

ERCO also has new bollards coming soon. (the last 2 on left come in smaller size.)

Feelux

We looked at the monorail system.

There is a pendant fixture for the little track that had a 1,000 lumen output.

We also looked at the FLX Stix.

XAL Showroom

At the new XAL showroom, they presented the new commodity and boutique products. Under the Commodity products we saw the Vela, Mino 2.5 and Baso family.

Vela Evo was launched globally in 2017 in 3 sizes of 1.5', 2', 3' and 4' diameter. The 1.5' model is priced at $540 and goes up to $5000 for 4' version which can be used even as a high bay architectural fixture due to high lumen output.

What is unique about this fixture is the double sided printed led board, for uplight. Currently, the standard color temperatures although the tuneable white is under development for European market, it is available in both tuneable and RGB for US market.

In the surface mounting installation the gap between the cone shape housing on the back of the fixture and the ceiling is just 1 inch and wont be noticed even when looked closely.

The BASO family is another product which we looked at. It is exclusively available in US market and comes in 1.5", 2.5" and 4"  wide recessed extruded aluminum profile, trimless or with trim. The Wallwasher  version has 1.5 aperture, snap-in lens, 3500K and 4500K available. It is also customization for larger projects and quoted around $90/ft. The board and cover are integrated and use snap system to be placed to the channel, aluminium board to help the heat transition. It also has the wall to wall configuration.

The Baso Cove is coming on August 2018 in 3.5" and 4" aperture. It also benefits from snap-in system to be used in trimed and trimless shape in wood ceiling.

Later they showcased the Task system and Move It system which belong to their boutique products line.

The Task acoustic is an office lighting. It is an edgeLed product in 4', 8' sections, 2'x2' corner and curved corner. They recently launched acoustical panels made out of PVD  to reduce noise. It is designed in an inlay and single mount to go with the fixture in half circle or half square shapes based on fixture shape.

The Task System is another Edge lighting product in this family. It comes in 4', 8', 12' sections and 2'x2' corner which also comes as wall mounted.  There is a linear connector between each fixture. The driver is in the first 3 set to keep the board temperature down. The optic is in 4 layers to achieve low glare. There is also an extra set of LED on the back of channel to achieve the asymmetric distribution. The ratio of direct/indirect could be between 60% to 40% and 30% to 70%  uplight. The direct/indirect lighting are controlled together (no separate dimming). Suspension head and wall to wall option are also available for this fixture. The quoted price is around $100/ft.

Their other boutique product is the Move It System. It is a magnetic track system with 1" or 2" wide suspended extruded profile channel and various inset options like; spotlight, linear light and pendent recessed light and uplight which are flexible and adjustable. The spotlight has an adjustable beam angle of 17° to 43°.

The Move It system can Also be used as a wall-washer. It comes in 1', 4' and could have spotlights on the track which are non-current dimmable (12V). There are also Opals for 1' and 2' channels. Currently, the ends are glowing but they are considering to develop a non-glowing end. The snap-in system also reduces the errors of a contractor in case of the reverse installation. The channel can be used in the architectural cove. For using grazer as a cove light, only 6" spacing is required for shooting the light. They are developing a half channel in 2018 to be used instead of an architectural cove.

Digital dimming can be used for downlights on this system and Dali for individual track heads (700 lm to 1200 lm). They are currently looking to work with US control system manufacturers to make their controls compatible with this line.

From the Move It family, the Move It 25 with multi connector node is a unique outstanding magnetic lighting system. It can be ordered as a standard parts from the cut sheet. The end cap is a around unit which is power feeder with electric connectors, remote driver, 24 constant voltage. Each power feeder can takes 6 arms (channel is not cuttable. It has magnetic part.) with possibility of rotation for each arm to achieve the desired angle. It is a time consuming and expensive fixture, since it needs a lot of customization and communication.

And finally, they presented their newest creation, UNICO.

It gives a total control and flexibility over the light shape. They achieved a very narrow 12° spot, 35° round or square spot,  55° and 75° flood light, wall washer and symmetric/asymmetric light distribution all in one fixture. It has 2 mounting option, 6 design shapes, 9 light insets (up to 420 lm each) and three control options which can be individually combined.

New York Digital Showroom Visit

This past week, New York Digital invited us to visit their newly renovated showroom at 5 Penn Plaza. What a success - congrats to them!New York Digital is the NY rep for Acuity Brands, as well as many decorative and hospitality options. They are also the NY rep for Barrisol (stretch ceiling material) and Lumafilm, to work behind it.

Acuity Brands: nLight Controls

Regular and EM pack can by dimmed together. No bi-pass. Plug-load Power Packs listen to Occ Sensor only, not switches. So if person is in room, but doesn't turn the lights on, outlets still work. Network bridges to Gateway to create a network. Data management. For Time Clock only - if not needed, don't need to buy it. Wireless only available for Acuity fixtures with wireless component in them, and cannot be networked. Software available to do space management by using sensors. Devices only take a few seconds to function once connected to a fixture.

Fresco controller also speaks to DMX. Plugs right in.

Delta Light Showroom

We had the pleasure of visiting the Delta Light showroom near Madison Square Park. Delta Light is a Belgium company, with warehouse for quick-ship products located in Florida. They recently restructured the company which resulted in about a 30% price reduction across all products without compromising on quality. All of their LED products are dimmable. Typically they suggest 0-10V but their drivers can accommodate other protocols as well. Most of the LED diodes they use are Bridgelux for the architectural fixtures while Cree is typically installed in the more decorative luminaries that do not require dedicated optics. The lumianires are within two McAdams ellipse and fall within a client specified quadrant. The lead times for most products are 4-6 weeks and any special modifications are will probably require 10-12 weeks lead time.

The SuperNova is a luminous surface that can be suspended, semi-recessed, or fully recessed. It is available in a variety of different shapes and sizes.

The Spy series are all of the cylindrical downlights that are available as track heads, surface, or recess mounted. The MidiSpy luminaire (1.75in aperature) is able to be installed as a recessed fixture but has an added layer of flexiblity that allows it to be pulled down and adjusted 90 degrees and rotated 360 degrees. They offer many different optics that are field changable

The Rodi Series also offers flexibility. It is a recessed adjustable down light can rotate and swivel within a dish.

The Super-Oh lumianire family is a suspended ring of light that is availble in many sizes. The light source shown in the image is small LED down lights but can also use Edison lamps.

They have a variety of exterior and interior sconces.

ERCO

In February we had the opportunity to visit ERCO in New Jersey. Their showroom has many of their fixtures set up so you can see how they perform in person, with the capability to set up custom mock-ups on request. One of the helpful things we learned from our visit is to use the code .099 at the end of any specification to call attention when we want to modify the fixture from the standard offering. The first fixture we looked at was a tall skinny task light. It throws light horizontally and has an integral dimmer. We liked the fixture and think it would be even better as an exterior bollard because of the slim profile. As of now, Erco does not have any plans to make it rated for exteriors.

We looked at all of the track lights that ERCO has to offer. It was great to see them in action since we typically think of Erco for only exterior applications. Their track heads and flood lights use a collimator to create their varied optics. The fixtures are standard with 3k and 4k but can be provided with a lens that has a gel coating from Rosco to warm it up.

The Pollux is a small profile track head that is available in either 2 watts or 6 watts. The 2-watt version is a single diode and can have a 6° beam spread. The smallest beamspread the 6-watt version can accommodate is 14°.The Pollux is also available with a framing projector configuration. The 2W was impressive in the 6°, throwing a lot of bunch. The two wattages could work in a residence that does not have particularly high ceilings.

Similar 2W Parscan fixture shown below.

There is a potentiometer on most fixtures that allow you to dim them locally, and the driver itself is ELV to 1%. ERCO has worked to develop their own drivers so they can control how their fixtures perform.

The Pan Track is a wall wash track head that is available with either a dedicated wall wash design or a flood light with wall wash optics. The advantage of using the dedicated wall wash is that you are able to get a 2:1 spacing with an even illumination. The wall wash optic version, however, gets more light at the top of the wall since it is adjustable.

There is also a monopoint track adapter that ERCO offers and is compatible with most of their track heads.

The Lightgap is a new linear fixture designed for grazing in cove applications. The design of the fixture has a lens on the bottom and the side to allow for more light to be distributed out and making sure that the light can hit higher on the wall. The fixture comes in three sizes and can be mounted end-to-end for a continuous appearance. The downside to the Lightgap is that it requires one driver per module and they need to be remotely located.

We also got to see their exterior fixtures in action. It was nice to see them in the showroom because the space is large enough to have more than one fixture. That way we were able to visualize what the effect would be with different spacing. We also got to see the different bollards next to each other to get an idea of what the different light distributions look like. The Castor was able to project light with a wide distribution. The Kubis Midi has two distributions; a wide and a deep. The wide distribution did not project out very far compared to the Castor. The Castor can also go as low as 12".

The Kona XS is a new version of the regular Kona but in a smaller package. It uses the same LEDs as the small Pollux track head with the 2-watt and 6-watt versions. It produced a nice clean beam especially with the 6° from the 2-watt version.

Because ERCO is trying to get more projects in the US to use their track heads, they are working with SDA to come up with a special price for the Pollux for small quantities in small residential applications. They want to keep themselves in the game so they are focused more on exposure than for a profit at that point.

USAI Showroom

We stopped by the USAI showroom recently and were able to look at all of their fixtures installed. It's a great space and opportunity to see what they can do in real life applications. Be sure to stop by and bring your clients to experience what USAI has to offer.
