PMC Lighting

PMC Lighting is a manufacturer based in Rhode Island. They pride themselves as being a custom manufacturer. They have partnered with Lumenetix to provide tuneable Aura modules in both their recessed downlights as well as most of their other fixtures including linear and troffers. The modules allow you to dim the fixtures, change the color, and the hue and saturation. There is an app that lets you group fixtures and customize them. You can also tie it into a control system using DMX. The ArcX is family of curved linear fixtures that come in standard or custom pieces. The standard shapes are able to be connected together to form custom patterns and are available as a quick ship program. Radii larger than 6', they are able to incorporate the Lumenetix Aura modules.

All of the fixtures that PMC offers can come in any RAL finish at no added cost.

Barn Light

O'Blaney Rinker brought Barn Light to our office so we could take a closer look at what they are able to do. They are a Florida based company and offer a 2-3 week lead time for most of their fixtures. They manufacture everything themselves, so they are able to modify in-house and provide answers quickly. Barnlight offers fixtures in porcelain, aluminium, brass and copper with many standard finishes. Barnlight now offers most of their fixtures with dedicated LED as well as their standard incandescent versions. Currently they are using CREE modules, however, they are working on developing a proprietary module with optics and warm-dim technology.

Delta Light Showroom

We had the pleasure of visiting the Delta Light showroom near Madison Square Park. Delta Light is a Belgium company, with warehouse for quick-ship products located in Florida. They recently restructured the company which resulted in about a 30% price reduction across all products without compromising on quality. All of their LED products are dimmable. Typically they suggest 0-10V but their drivers can accommodate other protocols as well. Most of the LED diodes they use are Bridgelux for the architectural fixtures while Cree is typically installed in the more decorative luminaries that do not require dedicated optics. The lumianires are within two McAdams ellipse and fall within a client specified quadrant. The lead times for most products are 4-6 weeks and any special modifications are will probably require 10-12 weeks lead time.

The SuperNova is a luminous surface that can be suspended, semi-recessed, or fully recessed. It is available in a variety of different shapes and sizes.

The Spy series are all of the cylindrical downlights that are available as track heads, surface, or recess mounted. The MidiSpy luminaire (1.75in aperature) is able to be installed as a recessed fixture but has an added layer of flexiblity that allows it to be pulled down and adjusted 90 degrees and rotated 360 degrees. They offer many different optics that are field changable

The Rodi Series also offers flexibility. It is a recessed adjustable down light can rotate and swivel within a dish.

The Super-Oh lumianire family is a suspended ring of light that is availble in many sizes. The light source shown in the image is small LED down lights but can also use Edison lamps.

They have a variety of exterior and interior sconces.

Apogee Lighting

Apogee Architectural Lighting stopped by our office to show us their product lines. Their website does not show the complete story of what they offer and what they are able to do. The first fixture family we looked at was the Lightscape family. The Lightscapes are complete luminaires that incorporate Newmat material at the face of the fixtures with LEDs backlighting it. There are several standard shapes, however where they stand out is the custom shapes they are able to do. Apogee populates their own LED boards so they are able to get the custom shapes with even illumination. 16'x8' is the largest single fixture they are able to make. There is also a sound dampening version that incorporates sound absorbing material inside the fixtures.

Apogee is also able to provide LED boards to backlight Newmat ceilings. They have the ability to use optics on each of the LED nodes allowing them to achieve a 1" depth with even illumination. An important thing to consider is that the deeper the backlight depth, the lower the cost is.

Apogee has a linear fixture that is completely encapsulated for a diffuse line of light. The standard colors range from 22-4K. The light strips are stocked and made locally.

They also have a clear encapsulated linear strip that is 120V, ELV dimmable and exterior rated. It is available up to 300' per power connection and is cuttable in 4" increments. The tape light can also be provided with a diffuser.

It was great getting a better look at what Apogee is able to do. Since they are a local manufacturer, they are able to ship quickly and provide help on-site if any issues arise.

Kreon

Kreon came by our office to present the Holon, Aplis, and Cana luminaire famies. The Holon is a cylindrical luminaire that can be recessed or surface mounted to the ceiling. It has an adjacent driver that does not need a junction box to be powered but can be provide with an IC rated casing if necessary. The Holon provides (2) sizes for their luminaires the 80(3in) series and the 40(1.5in) series. The different sizes have the same proportions which enables a uniform aesthetic.

The Aplis  The 80 series contains a XICATO LED module with 90+ CRI and delivers between 900 lumens to 3000 lumens. The 40 series contains a CREE module with 95+ CRI and can deliver between 200 lumens (at 2 watts) to 500 lumens (at 7 watts). The Aplis is the downlight family that is available in (4) sizes for their luminaires  and is available in round or square apertures.  The Aplis 40 (1.5 inch aperture) and Aplis 80 (3 inch aperture)  have the option for a wall wash optic with the potential to provide 1x2 luminaire spacing.

Finally the Cana family is a new line they are releasing. It is available in the 40, 80, or 120 sizes. The Cana is a linear channel that can be recessed, surface, or pendent mounted. Cana can be used in conjunction with the Holon, Aplis, or Ligna (linear light)  luminaires. There is no field adjustability everything is fully customized during shop drawings. All of these products are available in black or white but can provide any RAL color at an extra cost.

Arcluce

Arcluce is an Italian company based in Milan where they manufacture all of their products. They are now bringing some of their product lines into the US market through their partner at USALightings. Most of their fixtures are still in the process of being certified but should be available soon.

Krio LED is a recessed rectilinear steplight with a flush glass lens.

Napo is a drop lens recessed steplight that we looked at. It has a nice quality to it and would be a good option as a marker light as it does not produce a lot of useable light.

Lunio is a post-top fixture that has a mushroom shape with good glare control.

Lunio 7 is another version of the Lunio post-top fixture that is intended for road applications because of the design of the mounting that allows for a further distribution.

Deudieci is an exterior adjustable floodlight that is available in two sizes. The largest is available with 46watts at 5000 lumens.

The Tito 25 is a 2watt flood light that is IP68 rated and can be installed in water features up to 3ft in depth. There are various beam spreads available including an elliptical optic.

Ellis 2 is the larger version of two elliptically shaped sconces that can be up, down or up and down distributions.

Klou-Ik is a series of bollards that are available in three heights. They are also available with 180° or 360° distributions.

Remains Lighting

Remains Lighting is a decorative lighting manufacturer based out of Brooklyn offering high quality products with beautiful aesthetics. Their products typically house incandescent lamps but offer retrofit LEDs and dedicated LEDs as well. All of their interior and exterior rated fixtures are UL listed and are able provide wattage restriction labels. Remains offers fixtures that house gas lamps. The standard lead time is 4-6 weeks but are able to provide rush services if needed. Overall Remains offers highly customizable products and are happy to work with designers to meet performance, aesthetic and budget needs.

Tegan Lighting

Tegan Lighting has officially released their exterior cable mounted light system that we first got a look at during the SDA showcase last fall. The suspension power cable can be run in lengths up to 110' using 24VDC. Each light point can be offered as a direct component or with a 1' pendant mount. The great thing about the system is the flexibility it offers. Each light point mounts to the cable where you locate it and connects to the power via sharp pins. The cable is self-healing so you can move the lights later on and it retains its IP67 listing.

They offer multiple standard options in terms of shades and accessories that can be combined in various arrangments. Tegan can also modify some of their shades as well including using colored glass for their shades with certain order quantities. Since the fixtures are designed for exterior applications, their woven shades they offer are IP67 listed as well.

Dado Lighting

Dado stopped by our office to offer a refresher in what they are able to do with their fixtures in terms of custom designs. They pride themselves on being able to accommodate any angles. To ensure the installations are exact, they design and manufacture the connection pieces that allow them to have varied angles and not rely on the contractor to line up the fixtures. Everything is designed in pieces so that the contractor does not have to touch the LEDs and reduces errors in the field. One thing we discovered they can do is to provide white LEDs on one side and RGB on the other to operate with two circuits.

The SimpleLine is their standard fixture line that is the thickness of drywall and gets mudded in for a seamless appearance.

The HardLine is an extruded fixture that lets you install the fixture in applications with wood and stone.

Dado also has the capability of printing images and patterns on their lenses. This would be a great option for incorporating room numbers into the design.

We know Dado and like to use their CabinetLine fixtures for millwork applications, but it is alway good to see examples of how they use their other lines as well.

Lutron

Lutron has introduced a new product called Vive. It is a wireless lighting control solution best used for retrofit applications in medium sized spaces such as offices and restaurants of around 10,000 sf. Additionally it can be replicated and expanded into larger spaces. Essentially, the PowPak is installed to existing fixtures and communicates to the Vive wireless hub. Users are then able to control the fixtures through any device with internet access. This also allows for the integration of sensors.  It is capable of being installed in conjunction to an existing Maestro hub in retrofit applications. Vive is able to match controls to fixture packages (0-10V, phase control, switching, ect.) and is code compliant. Vive Wireless is a cost effective alternative for hard wiring controls.

LED Linear

LED Linear has an economic version of their standard tape called Flex ECO White. It is available at about a 40% cost savings. Like with their other families of tape, it is offered in LD or HD spacing versions. The LD comes in 5" increments and the HD is a tighter spacing and available in 2.5" increments. To save cost the economy roll is available only as a full roll instead of in exact lengths. LED Linear uses different chips in the economy line than their standard Hyrda tape and is less efficient. It can still be provided with an IP67 rating fro the roll and can be cut in the field and add the connector that seals the tape again. The economy tape also extends into the encapsulated fixtures and can be found in the Nike product. The Luna is a new complete fixture that LED Linear is branching out and providing. The fixture boasts a slim profile and can fit within 3/4" gypsum ceilings. Any of the lenses that LED Linear offers can be used with the Luna. You can remove the end caps and butt the fixtures up to one another for a continuous appearance. Unfortunately, they do not have a way of securing them together as of now so there is a chance for the fixtures to not be completely straight if the contractor is not careful with the installation.

We also got to take a look at the Mars fixture which is another new complete fixture LED Linear has developed. Mars utilises the LD version of the tape lines because it has a series of baffles and reflectors that need the looser spacing to work properly. Because of the baffles it achieves a quiet appearance when it is in the ceiling. It is available in 5" increments.

The Vesta is a new linear fixture that has an angled extruded housing. Depending on the side you install the fixture with, you can have either a 30° or 60° angle.

Alight

Alight has a new fixture they introduced to us called the Apex. It is available as a surface, suspended or recessed option.  The Apex boasts a quiet glare control with baffles as well as a bevel trim. The baffles are available in either white or black finishes. There is one standard output, but as with their other fixtures, they are able to program the drivers at the factory for any other desired output.

The ACL7 and ACL8 are two new fixtures as well that have been released within the last year. They are recessed and pendant mounted linear wall washers. The unique thing about the fixtures is that they have a black reflector on one side that helps give a quiet appearance when the fixture is installed. There is a small bump where the reflector sticks down below the ceiling but it is not very noticeable especially when it is installed in the ceiling. The boards that they use for these fixtures come in 6" modules, so they can do a custom length as small as 6".

ERCO

In February we had the opportunity to visit ERCO in New Jersey. Their showroom has many of their fixtures set up so you can see how they perform in person, with the capability to set up custom mock-ups on request. One of the helpful things we learned from our visit is to use the code .099 at the end of any specification to call attention when we want to modify the fixture from the standard offering. The first fixture we looked at was a tall skinny task light. It throws light horizontally and has an integral dimmer. We liked the fixture and think it would be even better as an exterior bollard because of the slim profile. As of now, Erco does not have any plans to make it rated for exteriors.

We looked at all of the track lights that ERCO has to offer. It was great to see them in action since we typically think of Erco for only exterior applications. Their track heads and flood lights use a collimator to create their varied optics. The fixtures are standard with 3k and 4k but can be provided with a lens that has a gel coating from Rosco to warm it up.

The Pollux is a small profile track head that is available in either 2 watts or 6 watts. The 2-watt version is a single diode and can have a 6° beam spread. The smallest beamspread the 6-watt version can accommodate is 14°.The Pollux is also available with a framing projector configuration. The 2W was impressive in the 6°, throwing a lot of bunch. The two wattages could work in a residence that does not have particularly high ceilings.

Similar 2W Parscan fixture shown below.

There is a potentiometer on most fixtures that allow you to dim them locally, and the driver itself is ELV to 1%. ERCO has worked to develop their own drivers so they can control how their fixtures perform.

The Pan Track is a wall wash track head that is available with either a dedicated wall wash design or a flood light with wall wash optics. The advantage of using the dedicated wall wash is that you are able to get a 2:1 spacing with an even illumination. The wall wash optic version, however, gets more light at the top of the wall since it is adjustable.

There is also a monopoint track adapter that ERCO offers and is compatible with most of their track heads.

The Lightgap is a new linear fixture designed for grazing in cove applications. The design of the fixture has a lens on the bottom and the side to allow for more light to be distributed out and making sure that the light can hit higher on the wall. The fixture comes in three sizes and can be mounted end-to-end for a continuous appearance. The downside to the Lightgap is that it requires one driver per module and they need to be remotely located.

We also got to see their exterior fixtures in action. It was nice to see them in the showroom because the space is large enough to have more than one fixture. That way we were able to visualize what the effect would be with different spacing. We also got to see the different bollards next to each other to get an idea of what the different light distributions look like. The Castor was able to project light with a wide distribution. The Kubis Midi has two distributions; a wide and a deep. The wide distribution did not project out very far compared to the Castor. The Castor can also go as low as 12".

The Kona XS is a new version of the regular Kona but in a smaller package. It uses the same LEDs as the small Pollux track head with the 2-watt and 6-watt versions. It produced a nice clean beam especially with the 6° from the 2-watt version.

Because ERCO is trying to get more projects in the US to use their track heads, they are working with SDA to come up with a special price for the Pollux for small quantities in small residential applications. They want to keep themselves in the game so they are focused more on exposure than for a profit at that point.

GVA Lighting

GVA stopped by with some updates to their fixtures. We got a closer look at the highlighter. It is available in increments of 1' up to 8'. They are also able to do curves with them and the smallest radius being 5'. The fixture is exterior and mounts to the surface of the exterior of the building. The fixtures are 48v with a high wattage driver so you are able to do long runs up to 1000' with one power feed. We also took a look at their color amp technology in their flood light that utilizes four colored diodes per node. This allows for better mixing and better saturation. They still utilize the other version which does not m ix as well but they are able to use a 4degree beam spread.

GVA has their own photometry lab so they have the ability to make its files using any of their optics.
