Studio

WALD Studio and William Armstrong Lighting Design were established in New York City in 1995 with a commitment to the collaborative process of design and the desire to provide quality professional services.  We have over 20 years experience in architectural lighting design.  Our small office of lighting professionals work closely with our clients and their design teams to develop lighting designs that are attractive and practical, as well as cost-effective and responsible to today’s demands for energy efficient lighting.

Each project is unique and is regarded as such, with great care given to all phases of the design development, document preparation and construction coordination.  We strive to provide lighting designs that are closely integrated with the architecture, while at the same time bringing light into spaces that is well suited to its function.

Our work can be seen all over the world.  The projects we have designed range greatly in size, from large shopping centers to intimate fashion boutiques and private residences.  WALD’s notable completed work includes Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center; Columbia University Uris Hall (School of Business); the Blue Hill at Stone Barns restaurant; Tom Ford retail boutique in New York City; and many private homes and apartments.

William Armstrong has over 30 years’ experience as both an architectural and theatrical lighting designer.  He started in the lighting design profession working in the theatre where he designed numerous theatrical productions worldwide, including both Broadway and off-Broadway shows.  The progression to architectural lighting was consistent with his love for the way in which light inhabits space.  Bill’s lighting designs encompass a diverse range projects all over New York City, throughout the United States, and overseas.  These include such highlights as: the restoration of an historic ballroom in Indianapolis, Indiana, where top name jazz big bands performed and local high school held their senior proms; numerous retail venues ranging from Gucci and Calvin Klein to Levis and Juicy Couture; shopping centers and retail developments all over the world; and private residences for the rich, famous and not-so-famous.  Bill is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in design from the Yale School of Drama at Yale University. He is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (I.E.S.).

Gisbel's career as a lighting designer began at WALD Studio while she was still a student. After graduating, she gained experience exploring innovative, technical approaches to implementing design at Lightbox Studios, followed by closely collaborating with interior designers and architects to create beautiful, playful spaces at ICRAVE. Gisbel now rejoins WALD Studio, bringing her experience in a range of project types consisting of hospitality, commercial, residential, healthcare, and public spaces to their team.
